New Member Tech Training Information

New to the organization? Here’s everything you need to know to complete the required technology training classes.

Step 1: Ask Yourself a Question: Have you taken an MCFRS Tech Training class since 2002?

If you have, you probably already have a website account (even if you don’t know about it). Contact Jeff Feiertag (jeff.feiertag@montgomerycountymd.gov / 240.777.2460) for the username and password. Please do not attempt to create another account; skip to step 3 below. If you try to create an account and you already have one, you'll create a mess that needs to be cleaned up on the back end of the system.

Step 2: Create a Tech Training Website Account.

  • Click the Yellow Quick Registration box.
  • Fill in the required fields and click the Create User box.
  • Wait for the system to tell you that the account has been accepted and click the Continue button.
  • Fill in the new fields that appear and click the OK button.

Step 3: See What is Available on the Website for You.

Click the red Students box and look around. This is your menu, so use whatever you would like.

Step 4: Read Course Descriptions for 800 MHz Radio, eMEDS, FireApp and MDC.

These courses (or the e-course alternatives) are required. For IECS-required classes, the breakdown for instructor-led classes and e-learning classes is pretty simple:

  • 800 MHz Radio Intro: Combined on-line course and in-person assessment test with the LFRD training coordinator (or designee) during the pandemic
  • eMEDS Elite
    • eMEDS Elite Intro (for EMT Students): Instructor-Led Course in the Training Lab (at the tail end of EMT and not scheduled separately by the student)
    • eMEDS Elite Transfer (for Students Who Took EMT Out-of-County or passed EMT at the PSTA prior to January 2016): Instructor-Led On-Line Course via Teams during the pandemic (scheduled by the LFRD training coordinators with Jeff Feiertag)
  • FireApp Intro: On-Line E-Learning Course with On-Line Assessment Test
  • MDC Intro: On-Line E-Learning Course with On-Line Assessment Test

Step 5: Take the 800 MHz Radio Intro E-Course

  • Click the red box (student menu) and click the link for E-learning Courses.
  • Find and click the 800 MHz Radio Intro E-Course, located at the top of the list.
  • Take a screen shot of the final page, after passing your on-line assessment test, and send itvia e-mail to your LFRD training coordinator.
  • Schedule an in-person assessment test with your LFRD training coordinator.
  • This course is open to all members with no prerequisites.

Step 6: Learn about MCFRS and Continue through Your Non-Tech Classes.

Continue to the point where you have registered for EMT-B and/or Essentials and then consider the ePCR, FireApp and MDC courses. You will not need to know these programs until you are ready for those PSTA courses. If you take these tech courses too soon, there will be too much time between learning the software and using it in the field.

Step 7: Take the FireApp Intro and MDC Intro E-Learning Classes.

These courses are all found in the Student menu (red box). Just follow the link for E-Learning Courses.

Step 8a: Take eMEDS Elite Intro as Part of EMT at the PSTA.

While it used to be scheduled separately by each student, that is no longer the case. You will participate in eMEDS Intro when you are just on the cusp of getting to use the software in the field.

Step 8b: Take eMEDS Elite Transfer if you took EMT elsewhere in Maryland but do not have eMEDS experience in other MD jurisdictions.

This is an intro-level class but ensures that you will not be shut out of the process since most people take eMEDS Intro while in EMT class. (Note: If you took an eMEDS Elite class in MD, you are eligible for equvalency credit without having to take the MCFRS training. Ask your training coordinator to request the credit from Jeff Feiertag, IT Training Coordinator.)

Step 9: Inform Your Training Coordinator that You Have Passed the Class(es).

(S)he will verify your dates of completion on the Tech Training Website. You will be granted FireApp software login rights when you have been promoted to FF-1 or EMS-1. You will be granted eMEDS software login rights when you have been promoted to EMS-1.
